Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, and Thaddeus of Edessa, a disciple of Jesus (one of 70 or 72), brought Christianity to Iraq 2,000 years ago, in the first century A. D.

Iraq's Orthodox Syriac Church is one of the oldest in the world.

Until 2003, there were an estimated 500,000 to 1.5 million Christians in Iraq.

Since then, most of Iraq's Christians fled to Kurdistan to escape mass killings and destruction.

By some accounts, only 150,000 Christians remain in Iraq.

On 20 December 2020, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would visit Iraq for four days, from 5 to 8 March 2021.

Pope Francis is the first pontiff in history to visit Iraq.

The Pope was invited by the Iraqi government and the various Catholic churches of Iraq, particularly the Chaldean Church - and the Syriac Catholic, Latin, Maronite, Greek Catholic, Coptic, and Armenian churches.

Despite a surge of terrorism and a new wave of Covid-19 cases in Iraq, the Pope insisted on making the trip:

'Never before has a Pope been in the land of Abraham. Providence willed that this should happen now, as a sign of hope, after years of war and terrorism, and during a severe pandemic.'

It was the first papal trip abroad since the pandemic broke.

Pope Francis visited several cities, including Baghdad, Najaf, Mosul and Erbil and the Plain of Ur.

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass announced the discovery of a long-sought 3,000-year-old city buried beneath the sands near Luxor, 500 kilometres south of Cairo.

The archeological team led by Hawas called the find the 'second most important archeological discovery since the tomb of Tutankhamun' (King Tut) in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter.

The city was built by King Tut's grandfather, Amenhotep III.

Excavations, which began in late 2020, turned up a city, walls, rooms, pottery, seals, jewellery, 'tombs filled with treasures' . . .

This was the first time the QE I was in combat.

This was the first time US warplanes flew combat sorties from a foreign warship since the HMS Victorious in the South Pacific in 1943 during the Second World War.

Statues of persons involved with the residential schools, such as Sir John A. Macdonald (1815 - 1891), first prime minister of Canada (1867 - 1873, 1978 - 1891), were removed throughout Canada. Some were vandalised.

On 23 June 2021, the city hall of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan announced the discovery of the unmarked graves of 751 native children at the Marieval Indian Residential School.

The school was operated by the Roman Catholic Church from 1899 to 1997 in present-day Cowessess, in the southeast of the province of Saskatchewan, near the city of Saskatoon.

Mapping the Ocean Floor

One-fifth (or about 20%) of the Earth's ocean floor has been mapped.

In July 2021, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and others joined in a 10-year project to map the ocean floor of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Robert Ballard and his exploration vessel E/V Nautilus are to map the the 5,000-metre-deep (16,000 feet) ocean floor about Howland and Baker Islands in the central Pacific in 2021.

This was done previously by an underwater exploration outfit for an American mining company in 2019.

Howland Island is a National Wildlife Refuge, home to tens of thousands of birds.

In 1937, Earhart embarked on a flight around the world by the equator in a twin-engine Lockheed Model 10 Electra. With her was Fred Noonan, the best navigator of the day.

On the morning of 2 July 1937, Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae in New Guinea for tiny remote Howland Island in the middle of the central Pacific Ocean.

It was the first time anyone tried to do it.

Earhart and Noonan never reached the island.

On 23 June 2021, the city hall of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan announced the discovery of the unmarked graves of 751 native children at the Marieval Indian Residential School. The school was operated by the Roman Catholic Church from 1899 to 1997 in present-day Cowessess, in the southeast of the province of Saskatchewan, near the city of Saskatoon. In July 2021, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and others joined in a 10-year project to map the ocean floor of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Howland Island is a National Wildlife Refuge, home to tens of thousands of birds. Will they dig for minerals?* *Amelia Earhart's plane* While mapping the sea bottom about Howland Island, Ballard and the E/V Nautilus will search for the plane of Amelia Earhart. Lockheed Model 10 Electra Amelia Earhart was the second person to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. The first was Charles Lindbergh. *Amelia Earhart was hailed as the Queen of the Skies, First Lady of the Air* and Lady Lindy. In 1937, Earhart embarked on a flight around the world by the equator in a twin-engine Lockheed Model 10 Electra. With her was Fred Noonan, the best navigator of the day. On the morning of 2 July 1937, Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae in New Guinea for tiny remote Howland Island in the middle of the central Pacific Ocean. It was the first time anyone tried to do it. The distance from Lae to Howland is 2,221 nautical miles (2,556 statute miles) (4,113 km.). The direct non-stop flight was almost entirely over water and expected to take about 18 to 19 hours. Yet, there were incredible claims that Earhart and Noonan landed far out of their way - on Mili Atoll in the southeastern Marshall Islands and Gardner's Island in the southern Phoenix Islands. In the summer of 2019, Bob Ballard searched Gardner's Island and the sea about it and found no trace of Earhart or her plane. Ballard moved his search to the seas off Howland Island, to be conducted in 2021 - but he has been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
