National elections in 2020 reelected the NLD to head the government of Burma.

The day the new Parliament was to convene, in February 2021, the military arrested NLD leaders.

The military announced its own government.

The Burmese formed a new government, without the military, called the National Unity Government (NUG).

Suu Kyi holds the position of State Counselor with the NUG.

The president is U Win Myint.

The military expelled much of the Rohingya population. They live in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

The NUG recognises the Rohingya as citizens of Burma and their rights as such.

The NUG recognises the right of the Rohingya to return to Burma.

The political party of Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma is the National League for Democracy (NLD). It is by far the dominant political party in Burma.

Suu Kyi was arrested on 1 February 2021 and held in solitary confinement in Nay Pyi Daw Prison since June 2022.

On Monday night, 24 July, a member of the NLD announced that Suu Kyi had been transferred from Nay Pyi Daw Prison to a government building - a VIP or high venue compound reserved for deputy ministers - in the Burmese capital, Nay Pyi Daw.

Suu Kyi met the Speaker of the Lower House, Ti Khun Myat, and a visiting representative of the government of China, Deng Xijuan, China Special Envoy for Asian Affairs.
