The Spanish Flu Pandemic, January 1918
- December 1920; The name is thought to be misleading. The virus appeared
first in a US army camp in Kanas in March 1918. It appeared in France, Germany and England in the following month, April 1918.
But the virus was first reported later in Spain. 'Ah. . . ah . . . ah . . . choooooo!!' It spread from bats to civets (cats) to humans.
? Wuhan Market, the 'wet market' where the coronavirus is believed to have made its first appearance. A 'wet
market' or 'public market' sells fresh meat and fish, other fresh food produce and perishable goods. A 'dry market' is a 'dry
goods market', selling non-perishable products such as fabrics and electronic supplies. The P4 laboratory, Wuhan Institute of Virology Some believe there is evidence that lab technicians
in Wuhan created the coronavirus. One of the technicians caught the virus and spread it
to others. See: It is believed that five million Chinese from Wuhan spread the disease to the rest of China
when they travelled from the city to visit friends and relatives throughout China during December 2019 and January 2020
- in the month before Chinese Lunar New Year, which was on 25 January 2020. Most victims of
Coronavirus world-wide have been elderly people. -------- Symptoms How the virus is transmitted - It is possible to contract the virus without detection.
- It is possible to contract the virus without experiencing or displaying any symptoms. - It
is possible to contract the virus without ever testing positive. - It is possible to carry the infection undetected and yet infect others. - The virus can cause long-term damage to internal organs, particularly lungs (air
sacs), brain (causing strokes, seizures and temporary paralysis) and heart (muscle). - The virus may increase the risk of heart attacks, dementia and blood clots. People
react to the infection differently. Two people may be infected by the same source at the same time and yet one may never
know it and the other may die within hours. Infected persons do not die from
the virus itself but from complications, usually respiratory, caused by the virus. Protection To be sure, wear a full-body chemical protection
suit and a respirator. 'Social distancing' in Hanoi in May. One patron per table. The pandas are actually children's toys. The
patron sits opposite the panda. Fresh air and proper ventilation. Avoid stuffy
rooms. Avoid stale and stagnant air. The air might be contaminated. Ventilate the room. Open the windows.
Stale air goes out, fresh comes in. Wash the wrists, too. Wash your
hands often. Wash with soap and water. Wash with
60% - 80% alcohol disinfectant or gel. Wash before and after shopping.
Wash hands for 20 seconds at least. Avoid touching the face. Latex gloves offer some protection.
Clean all surfaces often. Pay digitally Wash food wrappings and containers with household bleach before opening food
packets. Food is generally safer in international chain stores and restaurants than locally owned stores.
Eat hot, cooked foods. Two
minutes in a microwave kills the virus. Get Vitamin C. Oranges have lots of Vitamin C. Other fruits and vegetables with a lot of Vitamin
C: banana Do not eat
cut (pre-cut) (pre-sliced) fruit and vegetables. Buy whole fruits and vegetables, wash well with water
and peel and slice them yourself. Get lots of sunshine (Vitamin C).
Sun bathing in Indonesia to fight
the virus in April. Sunshine kills the virus. Take Vitamin
C tablets. Exercise often. Many countries have closed city parks for various periods during the pandemic. This is to limit physical
contact between people. This is obviously a mistake. People need sunshine and physical exercise. Otherwise, they atrophy and
die. England wisely kept city parks open. Keep streets safe
by spraying with disinfectant. Remember! Hospitals are not the cleanest places in the
world. Vaccination (See below.) ----------- Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil Viviane
Castro in 2008 Carneval 21 - 28 February 2020 The first case of Covid-19 in Brazil was recorded in Sao Paulo on 26 February 2020. --------- Disneyland Paris Due to the Coivd-19 pandemic, Disneyland
Paris closed on 3 March 2020. The park reopened on 15 July and closed again on 30 October. On 2 April 2021, the park
closed until further notice. Disneyland expects the
park to restore full operations in 2022. ------------- Curfew in Los Angeles on
15 March 2020 --------------
Mosques closed The
two most sacred mosques in the world Mecca
and Medina Saudi Arabia The Grand Mosque of Mecca Due to Covid-19, Saudi Arabia closed the
Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca, the holiest site in Islam, and the Prophet's Mosque
(Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Medina, the second holiest site in Islam, in March 2020. The
Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque reopened in October 2020. ----------------- Prince Charles with his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. Camilla did not catch
the flu. ---------- On 27 March 2020, the British PM, Boris Johnson, tested
positive for the virus. ---------------- Repairing Notre Dame Repairs to Notre Dame de Paris, destroyed by fire in April 2019, were delayed by Covid-19. It is hoped that the cathedral will be ready before
the summer Olympic Games in Paris in August 2024. In Britain, Wimbledon cancelled its
annual tournament on 1 April 2020. First
cancellation since the Second World War. In
the U. S., the Masters golf tournament was postponed to 12 - 15 November 2020. In France, in April,
the start of the Tour de France was postponed for two months from 27 June to 29 August 2020. First postponement since the Tour began in 1903. Cancelled in the First World War (1914 - 1918) and Second World War (1939
- 1945). The French Open (tennis) was rescheduled
from May and June to late September and mid-October 2020. ------- |
