Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
8 March 2014
Boeing 777
239 passengers and crew bound for Peking from Kuala Lampur.
A controlled ditching, indicating the presence of someone
with flying experience in the cockpit.
An uncontrolled steep dive and crash, indicating no
control from the cockpit.
Satellites of numerous countries spotted possible debris in the southern Indian
Ocean shortly after the crash.
A starboard flaperon found on the beach of
Saint-André on the French island of Réunion in the western Indian Ocean in late July 2015.
An analysis of the flaperon indicted that it was not extended when the plane hit the water, thus the plane crashed
into the sea in a steep dive.
!
More wreckage was found on beaches of Mozambique and South Africa.
Three to four years of underwater search in the South Pacific failed to find the
plane.
Possible cause of incident: a 221-kilo cargo of lithium-ion batteries started a fire.
There were at least three reports of a plane on fire in the area of the southern Andaman Sea about the same time:
Two commercial passenger planes, flying in the vicinity, reported seeing a plane on fire.
Also, a woman on a private yacht, sailing from India to Phuket in Thailand, later recalled seeing a plane of fire fly
overhead.
Lithium batteries have been the cause of many on-board fires on planes.
Despite the many warnings, it was not until 2000 that airlines in the U. S. banned smoking on board.
It is only a matter of time before batteries and chargers are banned on planes.
Lithium batteries cause an on board incident at least once a week in the U. S.

The air traffic controller in Kuala Lampur called the plane:
'Malaysian 370! Contact Ho Chi Minh 120 decimal niner. Good night.
The final words from the cockpit of MH 370, in reply to Kuala Lampur ground control:
'Good night. Malaysian three-seven-zero.'
Some maintain that the voice was that of the pilot.
Others maintain that the voice was that of the co-pilot.
The above reply, from the cockpit, was actually incorrect form.
The cockpit should have repeated the assigned frequency just mentioned by ground control:
'Malaysian three-seven-zero. Will contact Ho Chi Minh 120 decimal niner. Good night.'

Four
famous monuments in Washington, D. C., clockwise from top left: Capitol
Building (meeting place of Congress), Lincoln Memorial (statue of Abraham Lincoln), White House (President's office and
residence), Washington Monument (obelisk in honour of George Washington)
It's an old story but one worth retelling here.
Once upon a time
there was a popular American president
Dwight D. Eisenhower ('Ike')
Soldier,
Supreme Allied Commander in WW2 (D-Day),
34th President of the U. S. (1953 - 1961).
He
was a grandfather figure, statesman, beloved by all.
Ike was a world leader in the post-war era with the other
Allied victors - Stalin (- 1953), Chiang Kai-Shek (1945 - 1975) Churchill (1950 - 1955) and DeGaulle
(1958 - 1969).
With a vice-president . . .
. . . Richard M. Nixon ('Dick'), who became a prominent figure after Ike suffered a heart attack early
in his second term . . .
. . . but lost in his bid for the presidency to
Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Sr.
Or, rather . . . Joseph
Kennedy's son, John F. Kennedy ('Jack'),
who
is remembered as an Irish Catholic from Boston. Some consider him a saint.
Many people believe the country went down the drain at this point, never to recover. Many former American leaders
do not like to be considered by histories written after 1960.
Kennedy was assassinated.
A commission concluded he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He was replaced by . . .
.
. . the vice-president, Lyndon B. Johnson (1963 - 1969) . . . who was blamed for everything -
the saint's death, Vietnam, negroes - and who very few can remember because he was drowned
out by . . .
. . . Nelson Rockefeller ('Rocky'), governor of New York.
Anyway,
Johnson handed it . . .
. . . to Nixon.
Nixon made Nelson Rockefeller's top advisor on foreign affairs, Henry Kissinger, his right-hand man.
Nixon and Kissinger put
on a dazzling performance in foreign affairs.
Nixon with Mao and Brezhev
Kissinger and Le Duc Tho
However, some of Nixon's cabinet secretaries and presidential aides and
even an Eisenhower in-law wound up in a big money scandal - and had to go.
His vice-president, whose name no-one can recall, also was caught in a money scandal and forced to resign.
Thus, following procedure, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Gerald
Ford ('Jerry') of Michigan, became the new vice-president.
Not long after that, Nixon faced impeachment.
So, he resigned and left the
office to his vice-president,
Ford (1974 - 1977)
. . . who took Nelson Rockefeller as his vice-president and made Henry Kissinger his secretary of state .
. .
. . . but could not overcome public displeasure with his predecessor's administration . . .
. . . and thus lost the
office to a flying saucer buff, Jimmy Carter of Georgia (1977 - 1981), who was really just a temporary stop-gap measure .
. .
.
. . until he was chased out by Ronald Reagan and his millions of friends.
Reagan was a Hollywood movie star and
represented actors in negotiations with studio bosses in the 1930s and 1940s.
A liberal Democrat in the 1930s and 1940s he became a conservative Republican in the 1950s.
He was a politician in the
1960s and 1970s. He was governor of California from 1967 to 1975.
He was considered a dark-horse candidate for president during the Republican convention of 1968.
He won election as president by a wide margin in 1980 and re-election
by a landslide in 1984.
Reagan was ever-popular. He brought Hollywood to Washington. His two terms were
an eight-year celebration.
Reagan kept it low-key.
Reagan was a staunch conservative. He warned against involving too much government in the lives of the people.
He gave the Navy its yacht club and ran up the biggest deficit in American history.
Reagan was followed
by his vice-president, George H. W. Bush (1989 - 1993), who did well but was done in by the falling economy . . .
. . . and lost
to Bill Clinton (1993 - 2001), a hillbilly from Arkansas who resembled a professional wrestler or country singer. He had a
bit of experience working as a lorry chauffeur in the U. K. He worshipped Kennedy (kissed
his ass) in public to get elected. In office, he caused a big scandal with an extra-marital affair with an intern.
He was roundly condemned and almost run out of town.
But he cut the deficit and balanced the budget. He took it out of the red and put it in the
black. A very rare thing.
He was succeeded by . . .
.
. . one of these three men:
George W. Bush, son of former president George H. W. Bush;
Dick Cheney, once a top Reagan aide, and
Donald Rumsfeld, considered a possible presidential candidate as far back as 1973.
They conquered the Barbary
Coast and subdued the pirates. They conquered Asia and repelled the invaders.
Somehow or other, they were
succeeded by . . .

A Mulatto Elected U. S. President
November 2008
Barack Hussein Obama II, 44th U. S. president (2009 - 2017), born in Honolulu in 1961.
-------
Obama's
father
Obama's father, Barack Obama, Sr. (1936 - 1982), was
from a Luo tribal village called Kogelo on Lake Victoria in Nyanza Province of British colonial Kenya.
Kenya
(formerly the protectorate or colony of British East Africa) is one of three countries, with Uganda and Tanganyika
(formerly a German colony), in a geographical region known as East Africa.
Lake
Victoria in East Africa Barack
Obama, Sr.'s father, Onyango Obama (1895? - 1979?), joined the local Catholic Church early in life.
He
was baptised by Seventh-Day Adventist missionaries.
He
joined the King's African Rifles during the Great War (1914 - 1918) and travelled to India and Tanganyika.
In
Tanganyika, he adopted Islam and took the name Hussein.
Hussein
Onyango Obama's son, Baraka Hussein Obama (or Hussein Baraka Obama), was
raised a Muslim.
He attended
an Anglican missionary school and became an Anglican at age six.
He
changed his name from Baraka to Barack.
He
did well in school, attending an Anglican boarding school and, with scholarships, studied at the University of Hawaii and Harvard University
before taking a position as an economist with the Kenyan government in Kenya.
He met another student at the
University of Hawaii, Ann Dunham, from the western United States. Ann lived with her
parents, who had moved to Honolulu in 1960.

Eventually, at
age ten, in 1971, Obama joined his maternal grandparents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, in Honolulu.
Obama was raised by his maternal grandparents in Honolulu. He completed secondary
school studies in Honolulu.

Obama, Jr. graduated from Columbia University in New York.
Obama settled in Chicago, Illinois to study and practice law.

wife, Michelle, also of Chicago, and their two daughters.
-----------
In
2008, Obama, a first-term Democratic senator from Illinois, competed with Vietnam War PoW John McCain, senator from
Arizona and the Republican candidate, for the presidency.
McCain was the son of Admiral John McCain Jr., commander -in-chief of the Pacific Fleet (CINPAC) (1968 - 1972).
Obama won the
election with 52.9% of the popular vote and 365 of 538 electoral votes.
He won it by worshipping Kennedy in public.
In truth, the country wanted a change. People were fed up with 'Iraq'. The 'Iraq War' was a
fraud. The excuse for it was false. There was also the big Red Cross-Iraq
scandal. There was a worse financial scandal at home - the sub-prime mortgage scandal.
The Democrats could have
run anyone for president and won the election.
He won it also
through the ambivalence of his opponent, who gave up in mid-year (and sold it).
Many could not believe the results. How could
it happen? There had to be an explanation. Obama was really Claude Williams - with a make-over.
Obama
succeeded George W. Bush (2001 - 2009).
Obama with his vice-president, Joe Biden, born
1942, an Irish Catholic lawyer originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania.

half-siblings, in Kenya.
Obama's Republican opponent in 2012 was a former Mormon missionary, Willard Mitt Romney, from
Michigan and Utah, and former governor of Massachusetts (2003 - 2007).
Romney's father, George W. Romney,
was president of American Motors (1954 - 1962); governor of Michigan (1963 - 1969); and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) (1969 - 1973) in the Nixon Administration.
Obama
won 51.1% of the popular vote and 332 of 538 electoral votes.
Obama served two terms as president (2009 - 2017).
Obama was almost as popular as Al Jolson.

-----------------
The U. S. A. in rigor mortis
The United States are a union (or federation) of 50 states - and a district
and territories.
In many matters, the federal
government, headquartered in the city of Washington in the District of Columbia (D. C.), cannot act without
the agreement of the states. The federal government is often obliged to defer to the states. For example,
it cannot declare war without a consensus of the states - the representatives of the states
in the bicameral legislature.
In nation-wide presidential
elections, the people cast their votes for a presidential candidate but they do not vote directly for a candidate.
That is, the popular vote does not determine a winner.
Each state selects
an elector to represent it in the electoral college. Each state has a certain number of electors, based on
the size of its population.
Thus, the most populous states have
the most electors - California (55), Texas (38), Florida (29) and New York (29).
The least populous states have
the fewest electors - Alaska, Delaware, Montana, South Dakota, Vermont
and Wyoming and the District of Columbia (Washington, D. C.) (each has 3 electors).
The candidate who wins the most votes nation-wide - the popular vote
- does not necessarily win the election.
A candidate must
win the votes - and electors - of each state.
The candidate who wins the votes of most the registered voters of a state, even if by just one vote, wins
all of that state's electors.
Thus, it is possible for a candidate to lose the
nation-wide popular vote but win the most votes in the electoral college.
In the 2016 elections, the mogul
Donald Trump, running as a Republican in his
first political campaign, defeated Hillary Clinton.
Clinton - a former First Lady, wife of former president
Bill Clinton and Obama's former secretary of state - was the first woman to run as a major party candidate
in a presidential contest.
Many voters considered Trump a rich playboy.
Many voters did not want a woman for president. Many recalled
Bill Clinton's scandalous extra-marital affair and did not want a return of the Clintons to the White House.
Trump lost the popular vote but won the
more important and deciding electoral vote - and the presidency.
Popular vote: Clinton 66 M, Trump 63

fastest time for the distance.
But the time was unofficial. The distance was run about a six-mile circuit
and thus not really a marathon. Kipchoge ran alone with windbreakers and against pace-setters.

Anything is
possible if you set your mind to it . . .
North Korea
In the 19th century Imperial Russia and Imperial Japan discussed dividing the Korean Peninsula. The dividing line would be the 38th Parallel.
The Russians would claim everything to the north of the 38th Parallel and the Japanese would claim everything to the south
of it. With the defeat of the Russians by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905, Japan claimed the
entire peninsula. Japan made Korea a protectorate
in 1905 and annexed it in 1910.
At Allied conference in Potsdam, Germany in July 1945, the Americans and Soviets agreed to defeat Japan
and jointly occupy the Korean Peninsula. The Soviets would occupy the peninsula above the 38th Parallel.
The Americans would occupy the peninsula below it. Korea remained part of Japan's empire to the end of the Pacific War in August 1945. The Soviets reached Korea in August and occupied the entire peninsula.
The Soviets turned over the southern half
of Korea to the Americans when the Americans arrived in September.
In the above photo, Soviet officers greet Americans GIs in Seoul in September 1945.
The Soviets and Americans agreed that Korea should decide
its own fate as one free and independent country. But things turned out differently. The north of the peninsula above the 38th Parallel became a totalitarian Stalinist communist state ruled
by a family dynasty. The south became a pro-American republic.
In 1949 and 1950, the Communist Chinese under Mao Tse-tung routed Chiang
Kai-shek's Nationalists from the mainland. In June 1950, North
Korea invaded South Korea with the backing of Red China and the Soviet Union. The
United Nations, led by the Americans and commanded by General Douglas MacArthur, pushed the North Koreans out of South Korea
and marched north all the way to the Chinese border. The Chinese
attacked and, with the North Koreans, pushed the United Nations out of North Korea and south of Seoul. The United Nations pushed the North Koreans and Chinese out of South Korea. The two sides fought each other along the 38th Parallel until a truce was agreed in July
1953.
